So, a few weekends ago, my boyfriend and I visited the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center in Ocala, Florida. They are open to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am - 4:00pm. Not only do you get a scenic drive, as it's located within Silver Springs State Park, but you can also walk around the Pioneer Village. This village gives you a glimpse at life in 1800s Florida.
My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed the museum. In their setback location, it's quaint and quiet on a Sunday afternoon. The volunteers are helpful, friendly, and willing to answer any questions you may have. You can feel a real snakeskin, turtle shell, see a Megalodon's gigantic jaw, and a dire wolf skull! You can experience how tribes crafted canoes and lived on the water, how Silver Springs made its debut on the big screen, the British period in Florida, conquistadors, massive amounts of wildlife skeletons, and learn about Ross Allen (a man who wrangled anacondas and ran his own reptile institute from 1930 to the mid 1960s.)
To elevate your experience, try the scavenger hunts. We did the museum bingo and were only two away from a coverall. (Not to brag or anything!) This museum may seem small, but it took us about 2 hours to explore, not including the pioneer village. Their program is great as well as they educate 4th and 5th graders on nature, animals, and such during the week.
I highly recommend the Silver River Museum if you are near Ocala or just looking to experience more of Florida. There is an $8 per vehicle charge with a select number of occupants when entering the State Park. With the museum being located inside the park, you will have to pay the $8. The museum costs $2 per adult. (The museum and park are separate organizations, that's why there are two different fees.) Soon, I hope to visit the museums counterpart, Silver Springs, and tell you all about it! Until next time. Bye!
