My nana was truly one of the best people I have known. She was a true badass gone way too soon. There were no elbows on her table, no smacking of gum, and definitely no attitude/backtalking. This story is the tale of how I found that out the hard way.
So, as you know (if you've read Build-A-Bear) I used to spend my summers at my grandparents' house. My grandad was working for Air Serv so most of the time it was my nana and me. On this day though, my best friend came over. We loved playing dress up in my grandparent's closet, use water as tears to prank my nana, and watch movies. Those were the best times just being dumb.
On this particular summer day, we were going to the pool. There was a community pool in their neighborhood. We spent our day in the sun, swimming for hours because we were mermaids, doing cannonballs off the diving board, you know summer swimming stuff. (Say that three times fast!) We were having a ball but by the end of the day we were absolutely exhausted. Maybe a little hangry. (Me trying to justify the actions for what you are about to read.)
We were getting in the car to head home. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, I popped off at the mouth. I can't remember what I had an attitude about, but I do remember my nana saying, "I'll stop this car and let you out here." I said, "Do it." She stopped the car, let my best friend and I out, (NO SHAME!) and drove off. We were sliding out of the car completely stunned.
I want to let you know that she left us by the road in a neighborhood not on a busy highway or something. But still we were completely shocked. We didn't even know what to do. Once the shock had worn off, we stumbled in the direction of home. We didn't have iPhones yet, so it was strictly on our memory. The whole time my best friend was freaking out, screaming "We're gonna DIE!" (Such a drama queen) (Says the drama queen) I was the calm one, crazy enough. I had a clear path and stuck to it.
The walk felt like 500 miles and 500 more but we eventually made it home. My nana was inside waiting for us. I apologized profusely for what I had said. I was lucky my best friend didn't hate me after this. My nana later told me that she never actually left us alone. She parked the car behind a magnolia tree, by our house, and watched us the whole time. She always knew how to nip things in the bud. I worked my hardest not to make this mistake again. I think I did a pretty good job at that too.
When has your attitude gotten you in trouble, were you younger or older? Thanks for reading, until next time. Bye!
