Psycho Dog: Calm before the storm

We got Lucy in 2014 after my grandparent's dog, Sadie, passed away. She was rescued from the woods (which plays a big part in her personality) and had been with a foster family. We adopted her from Pet Smart. The reason we were drawn to her was because of her demeanor. She was the only dog not completely losing her mind. She was in a small kennel curled up in a little ball. Not making a sound, just looking around. (Haha that rhymed)

Lucy is about 65lbs but thinks she's a lap dog. She seemed calm but we would soon find out this was not the case. Once we got her home, we found out she was oddly terrified of household items like ceiling fans, radios (when turned on), the air conditioner, dishwashers. She immediately latched on to our dog Rusty as well. Quite literally begging for his approval. She would crouch down low, crawl toward him until he looked at her. He would turn his nose up at her, but soon began to play with her.

The first instance where we discovered this girl's crazy nature was with my mom. My mom made a cup of coffee, headed to the living room to sit down and Lucy jumped up. She jumped a 5ft5 humans head height and spilled her coffee everywhere. All over the carpet, the chair, the table, everywhere. She was stunned to say the least.

This next story is mine. She was chasing a creature outside, I opened the door to make her come in, and cue me screaming her name! She leapt into the air, caught this poor possum off the top of the fence and ran. Full on panic set in as she snatched him, shook her head, and sadly killed him. Picture (or rather don't) a beautiful dog with a dead possum hanging out of each corner of her mouth. The juxtaposition of this was shocking.

The next scene was pretty comical though. Watching my mom and grandad chase her around the backyard with a plastic bag in hand trying to get the possum out of her jowls. They had to get on either side of the shed to block her in. This mission did eventually prevail. We were honestly a little scared of her for a while after this incident, I have to admit.

I always seemed to witness her craziness. She was able to jump our 6ft privacy fence. And of course, on this day that's exactly what she did. I looked around, saw her hanging from the top of the fence. Her whole body was in our neighbor's yard with her head and paws hanging on for dear life. She was loose in the neighborhood now, just wanting to run. We all hopped in the car searching for her. We drove around yelling her name but still couldn't find her. So, we decided to drive back home and hope she was there. Sure enough, there she was, sitting on the front porch in front of the door waiting for us. She stayed while we got out of the car and walked inside once we opened the door.

If you can't tell she was way more than we bargained for. She still is. That's how she tricked us. She's scared of household items even to this day and creatures way smaller than her. But all in all, she chose me to be her human, wishes she was a lap dog, and is the sweetest dog you'll ever meet!

Thanks for reading. Until next time, Bye!
